Nataša Teofilović (RS): a|symmetry

a|symmetry is an animation composed of the same singular arm movement. The virtual arm touches the void of virtual space. This is a wondering and sensual touch. When multiplied, the isolated movement starts to lose particularity and forms one picture. Rotation, symmetry, mirroring and time delay produce an abstract form. Such a form creates associations of a living structure and possesses qualities of symbols like mandala or some other kind of living, pulsating universe. Due to multiplication, every little and slow single finger movement gets a dramatic impulse and velocity in the final composition. The composition method is based on the idea (metaphor) of creating systems of meaning. Each particular and isolated artifact forms a centric, stable, reliable picture, when it passes through a lot of observations. Like a kaleidoscope. What is insignificant gets meaning. The result, i.e. “the big picture”, is produced with ordinary, human-like elements, and tells a story of unity, gentleness, love, human sensuality and imperfection (asymmetry), which make us unique.nn1

Bio

Nataša Teofilović is a media artist, whose recent work also includes digital ambiances. Through spatial disposition and animation, the works re-examine the perception of virtual characters and the boundaries between virtual and real spaces. She won an honorary mention in the first Prix Ars Electronica Collide@CERN competition and Jury Recommended Work at 15th Japan Media Arts Festival, Tokyo, Japan, 2012.
