weAREmedienkünstler (Moritz Schell and Frederic Seybicke) (DE): Rock Paper Scissors

Rock Paper Scissors is a game played between two computers. Like in the classic game, each computer runs its own random algorithm, choosing one of the three possible items. Connected by an ethernet cable, each computer plays its hand – the winning pc gets a point. In contrast to the human variant, the system lacks the pseudo-tactical ability to “read” the opponent. In this case the algorithms’ process, leading to a decision, uses the same random number generator. The process of learning or tactics is excluded and yet the viewer is tempted to pick a side. In the classic battle of black versus white pawns one instinctively chooses a preferred color or places a bet on the outcome of the game. In this scenario, the computer will fight to the end in the virtual ring – the viewer picks the side.

Bio

Moritz Schell and Frederic Seybicke, make up the media art duo, weAREmedienkünstler. They’ve developed numerous works through the course of their studies at the Bauhaus University Weimar – and have additionally exhibited independent and commissioned work. In early 2011, they founded weAREmedienkünstler, giving their artist collective a name. Throughout their artistic collaboration, they’ve increasingly focused on human-machine-interfaces. Through art-improvisations, they reconfigure existing interfaces, creating new interaction-systems or ironizing the relationship between human beings and machines. Since April 2013 they’ve been working as artistic collaborators at the Bauhaus University Weimar for the chair of multimedia-storytelling. Additionally, they continue to realize their exhibition series, Transitions, with the support of funding from the German region of Thuringia.
